FTP (transferring web pages to your web site)
  • What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol enables Internet users to send (upload) and receive (download) files to directories across the internet.
  • Where would I be transferring files to and from?
The starter GloryWorks Internet Access package includes 3 Megabytes of webspace on one of our servers. FTP is the way you transfer your files to that space to make a web site, or to share files with other viewers. These spaces are directories with your username as the directory name. You can make additional directories or folders within your directory for your files.
  • Why would I want to transfer files to or from the web?
There are several potential purposes for the webspace:
    1. Transfer Files. If you wished to have files that were accessible from various computers, you could upload them to your GloryWorks webspace and then they could be viewed or downloaded by other computers, (both computers need Internet access) and you would need to give them your password and username to upload/or download files.
    2. Web Sites. Perhaps the most common usage of the webspace is to display a webpage. To transfer the website to your Internet directory, you simply upload your HTML files (your main page must be called "index.html") along with the necessary graphic files and whatever else you are including on your page, including the files which branch off from links. (The address for your site would be "http://www.gloryworks.com/members/username", where "username" is replaced with your own username.)
    3. Once you learn how to use FTP, you will discover that there are many places on the Internet that offer downloads through FTP; such as MP3 music files. (To discover some of the files available for downloading through FTP, take a look at http://ftpsearch.lycos.com).
  • How can I use my own cgi scripts with my website?
There are several steps to follow to do this:
    1. Coordinate with GloryWorks Support. Using custom cgi programs requires coordination with GloryWorks. GloryWorks will inspect the cgi files for well behaved code and functional impact on the server prior to allowing execution. CGI programs must only be deployed on GloryWorks once they are debugged and tested. GloryWorks staff will manually do the code inspection and file transfer from your staging area to the production area. The size and complexity of the cgi program will determine the time needed to complete the inspection and file setup. Most of the time this can be achieved within two business days. Prior notification and work scheduling with Gloryworks is strongly recommended. An added service charge may be incurred pending evaluation of the project by GloryWorks staff. Email support@gloryworks.com with the project details to initiate this process.
    2. Upload the Files. CGI files can be uploaded to your webspace as any other file. It is recommended to put the files in a separate directory so they can be easily located and moved to the "live" cgi directory by GloryWorks staff. A good name for this directory is "cgi-bin-stage". CGI files must be well documented in the code and for all but the simplest programs a README explaining the functionality of the program is needed. Use the naming convention README-cgi_name for each cgi program. If the cgi program includes config files, data files, etc. create a separate directory for the entire cgi package. Depending on the day and time and prior coordination with GloryWorks Support in advance the files wil be moved from the staging area to the run location either immediately or within two business days. Please send an email to support@gloryworks.com with the above details to notify support when the file upload is completed.
    3. Final test and deploy. Once the files are in place testing can be done and deployment can be achieved by adding links for the cgi to your public web pages.).
