Frequently Asked Questions: Modem
  • What is a modem?
The word "modem" is an abbreviation of "MOdulator/DEModulator." These words describe the modem's job: it modulates data from one computer into sound for transmission to another computer, whose modem then demodulates the incoming sound back into recognizable data. This process allows two computers to communicate over a phone line.

To find out what type of modem you have:

    1. Double-click on My Computer
    2. Double-click Control Panel
    3. Double-click Modem
This area should tell you the speed, manufacturer and model of your modem.

The four most widely-used modem speeds at the moment are 14.4k, 28.8k, 33.3k and 56k (Although some modems are technically capable of transmitting at 56k, existing phone lines limit the actual transfer speed to around 52k.)
If your modem is 28.8 or below, it would be advisable to upgrade to 56k if at all possible.

If you do not have a modem, you'll need to install one in order to use GloryWorks' dial-up service. Another option would be to sign up for our DSL service, which is much faster than any modem connection, but costs a little more.
    Problems with your modem
  • Why won't my modem dial GloryWorks when I start my browser?
The problem probably lies with your computer attempting to dial your previous Internet Service Provider. Here's how to fix it:

    PC:
    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Go to Settings->Control Panel
    3. Double-click Internet Options
    4. Select the Connections tab at the top and make sure your GloryWorks connection is set as default (it should say "default" next to it in parentheses). If it isn't, select it by clicking on it once, then clicking on Set as Default.
    5. Then click on Edit and verify that the Internet Access phone number is correct.

    Macintosh:
PPP and Remote Access Users (MacOS 8.0 & up):
    1. Click on the Apple Menu and go to Control Panels->PPP (or Remote Access)
    2. Click on the File Menu, then on Configuration.
    3. Click GloryWorks configuration and select Make Active. Then make sure your Internet Access phone number is correct.

    FreePPP users:
    1. Open FreePPP Setup and make sure the Connect to screen is set to GloryWorks
    2. verify that you are dialing the correct number by comparing the number next to the Connect button with the Internet access number you were given.
    3. If the number is incorrect, click on the Accounts tab, select your GloryWorks account, and click Edit. Then click the Dialup tab and enter the correct number.
