Frequently Asked Questions: Domain Names
  • What is a Domain Name?
Domain names provide an easy way to uniquely identify web sites and their locations on computers. The Domain Name System database (DNS) translates this name into a unique numeric address called the Internet Protocol (IP)number which computers can understand.

To have a unique name and address to identify your web site, you need a domain name; such as, "mysite.com"   - but it's possible to register and reserve a domain name without having or putting up a web site; for example, you can use it as an address to get your Email, or you may want to reserve it ahead of time so it will not be taken later.

Domain names can now be up to 67 characters in length, but we don't recommend long domain names. It is much easier for users to find and remember your address and type it in correctly if it is kept short. The part of the name to the left of the dot is specific, the part to the right is general and denotes a category such as the ones below.

.com domain name extension is generally for commercial sites. Any person or organization may register a domain name in .com  All names in this category must be unique, and that is true for each extension or domain hierarchy.

.org was originally intended for miscellaneous entities such as non-profits such as churches. Any person may register a domain name in .org.

.net is a top-level domain name used for Internet administrative sites in the United States. ISP (Internet Service Providers) sometimes use .net.

  • Who owns a Domain Name?
When you register a Domain Name, you contract for the use of the name for the period of time you have registered and paid for. However, there is no permanent registrant for any domain name.
  • How much does it cost to register a domain name?
We use DirectNIC and their fees are $15.00 for 1 year, $30.00 for 2 years. We include registering on our server and hosting your domain name with the GloryWorks web hosting packages (registration agency fees apply).
  • What are NIC handles?
NIC handles are unique identifiers assigned to each domain name record, contact record, and network record in the Network Solutions' database. NIC handles should be used on registration forms whenever possible, as they save time and help insure accuracy. GD180-ORG is the NIC handle for GloryWorks.
  • How do I Register a Domain Name?
You must first verify the availability of a domain name before you register it (these instructions are for Network Solutions registration. Most registrars will be very similar):
    1. Go to the website http://www.networksolutions.com.

    2. Check to see if your desired domain name is available by typing it in in the search field and selecting the appropriate suffix from the drop-down list (.com, .net, .org).

    3. If it is available, make sure it is selected in the list and click the Continue button.

    Register Domain Name:
    1. On the next screen, click the Continue button next to the first option (titled 'Web Address').

    2. You will have two options: one for hosting with Networks Solution and the other if you already have the hosting information that we supply here. Click the Continue button under the later.

    3. Select the length of time you wish to register the name and click Refresh button.

    4. Enter your name and address and click Continue.

    5. There will be boxes to enter three USERNAME NIC handles (this is a unique I.D.) In the one marked "Technical Contact" enter the GloryWorks NIC handle: GD180-ORG

    6. Again, enter your contact information and click Continue.

    7. Enter the Primary Server information as follows:
    Host Name: GWNS1.GLORYWORKS.COM
    IP Address: 64.71.189.130

    8. Enter the Secondary Server information as follows:
    Host Name: GWNS2.GLORYWORKS.COM
    IP Address: 64.71.189.131

    9. Enter your confirmation/status Email address and click Continue.

VERY IMPORTANT: All future changes to your domain name and information will be made through the Email address you provide here. An Email will be sent to this address to confirm this registration as well as any changes you make in the future; such as, moving your domain name to another Internet Service Provider, and you must respond from this Email address. Therefore, we highly recommend you use an Email account that you may keep indefinitely (e.g., you can set up a web-based Email free with Hotmail or Yahoo).

    10. Review all the information you have entered and when it is correct, we recommend you print it and then click Continue.

    11. Enter your credit card information, make sure you agree with the Network Solutions' service agreement and click Continue.

    12. There will be a final summary of the transaction which we also recommend printing and then you are done. You should receive a confirmation Email from Network Solutions within 72 hours.
