IP add-ons for DSL
Internet Protocol (IP) Address Numbers:

IP numbers come in two types dynamic or static. Dynamic change every time a connection is made to the access server whereas, static IPs stay constant over time.

Static IPs are needed whenever access is needed to a machine on a LAN from outside the LAN, such as is the case with accessing a server through the Internet. Typically, servers are web servers, mail servers, name servers and media servers. Another, common need for a static IP is if a machine is used for remote work. Note, this does not mean that all LANs must have static "public" IPs -- static "private" IPs work fine for inside LAN access.

Dynamic IPs are less costly and serve the LAN well as long as the router has Network Address Translation(NAT) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) functionality.

Often a small number of static "public" IPs can be mixed with static or dynamic "private" IPs to build a very robust network of servers and user computers.
